You need to act smart and act quickly when fire breaks into your building. Don’t be dazed if your see fire eye to eye. Be strong, and keep your mind working. Most deaths happen during a firebreak because people panic and get stuck in places that they are not supposed to go.

For example, people might panic and shut themselves up in the elevator. This is a foolish and disastrous thing do to. Because during firebreaks, the elevator is the one that catches fire fast because the cable connecting it catches fire.

In a firebreak, before leaving your apartment or office, check if people are there in the office. If no, then come out and close the door. Do not lock it. When you close the door, you are also closing a path of destruction for the fire. You also give a room for fire personnel to get into. Fire personnel cannot obviously get into a burning room right away.

Yell fire, but do not panic. Ask others to stop screaming. Pull the fire extinguisher out, and break the fire-glass. Breaking the fire-glass sets the fire alarm. Sprinkles and fire-extinguishing gases might come into action. They could be effective if the fire is small.
Do not take the elevators. Even if you feel that this will get you down faster. Take the nearest fire exit. Some buildings have fire exits that are built to insulate people against fire. Fire exits are robust, and airy. You need to periodically check outside the window of the fire-exit if firemen are waiting for you with their ladders. If yes, hop on.

Fire Safety: Electrical Fire Prevention

Many residential fires are caused by electricity. Sometimes it is due to faulty wiring, but a lot of times it is due to improper usage of electrical outlets. There are a few tips and warnings to follow to prevent falling victim and extinguishing an electrical fire.

Do not overload the circuit with adapter after adapter. If you have ever seen National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, the way Clark Griswald has the Christmas lights plugged in is a great example of how not to do it. Too many electronics plugging into one outlet can overload the circuit and cause an electrical fire.

Never plug a damaged electronic device in. One of two things can potentially happen here. The first possibility is that the broken gadget shorts out completely and catches fire. The second possibility is that is creates a short in the wiring for the house and causes a larger fire.

Good housekeeping is a great way to prevent an electrical fire. Dust and dirt can get into electrical outlets, creating a short and causing a fire.

Low hanging light bulbs, like in the garage or basement, are easy hit and broken. This isn’t really a big deal unless the bulb is hit hard enough that the electrical wires inside the bulb touch a piece of dry wood, and then a fire may occur.

Always have all circuits connected to a circuit breaker or fuse.  Never bypass this process as these components break the circuit is a fault is found to help prevent a fire. If a circuit breaker keeps popping, this means there is a problem somewhere, not that it needs bypassed.

Lastly, if an electrical fire does occur, make certain you are using a proper extinguisher to put it out. Only use an extinguisher with a Class C rating. Any other extinguisher may be water-based and you could be shocked.

Fire Prevention: Properly Extinguishing a Campfire

A camping trip is a great way to spend some quality time with your family or friends. A campfire is a very common part of this quality time, you use it for warmth, cooking s’mores and keeping animals away. However, a campfire can turn tragic if it is not properly extinguished. Properly extinguishing a campfire is easy and can prevent a wildfire.

The first step in properly extinguishing a campfire is allowing enough time for all of the wood to burn to ashes. Partly burned wood may still have hot embers that can reignite the wood. Unattended burning wood can roll into the woods and ignite a larger fire.

Completely drown the fire. Do not just dump a cup of water on the fire and walk away. Make certain that every part of the fire is completely soaked not just the red embers. Though the ember may look like it is all ash, it may still be red-hot in the center.

Plan to wait for upwards of 30 minutes while you listen for the hissing sound to stop. This hissing sound is the water flash boiling when it hit hot embers, which means the fire is still hot and not ready to be left unattended.

Spread the ashes of the fire using a shovel. This allows you to search the ashes for any remaining embers that can blow into the woods and spark a wildfire.

Any remaining sticks or logs in the fire circle must be scraped with the shovel and inspected for hot embers. Scrape any hot embers off and douse them with water. Stir everything together again using the shovel and make sure it is wet and cool to the touch.

Wildfires can spread with just the smallest of spark, so it is imperative that all steps are followed.

Prevention Residential Fires: Proper Cigarette Handling

When speaking about residential fire management, most people will think of improperly functioning heaters or electrical fires caused by faulty wires. Actually, according to The National Fire Protection Agency, 56 percent of all fatal residential fires are caused by cigars and cigarettes.

Each year cigarette caused fires lead to nearly 1,000 deaths and 3,000 injuries. The property losses associated  with cigarette-caused fires exceed over half a billion dollars, yes that’s $500,000,000, and total expenses, including health care and income loss are estimated at four-billion dollars.

While smoking will likely never go away and seemly the majority of Americans being smokers, we can help prevent these fires. In 1987, the Federal Government tried to step in and force tobacco companies to manufacture a reduced ignition propensity (RIP) cigarette by using less porous paper and less dense tobacco. This did not take off and we are left with the majority of cigarettes still being a fire hazard.

There are a few tips to smoking safely though. The most important tip is to not smoke while lying down or while tired as it is easier to fall asleep and have the cigarette fall from your hands. Another tip is to never throw a finished cigarette in the trash, as you may not notice that it is still lit and this can ignite other items in the garbage. An overfilled ashtray can also lead to a fire as a lit cigarette may catch the extinguished cigarettes on fire. Another ashtray-related problem is people using items that are not intended as ashtrays. Ashtrays are made from extremely dense and non-flammable plastics, glasses or metals. Using a plastic bottle or a soda can could lead to a fire.

Residential fires can be drastically cut as long as cigarette smokers follow the proper steps in extinguishing a cigarette.
