It’s the middle of hurricane season, and you’ll want to make sure your home is ready to go should one come your way. There are several things you can do to prepare yourself for a hurricane.

The first step is to pick up a hurricane survival guide for step-by-step directions of what to do before, during, and after a hurricane. You’ll find a list of things to buy, do around the house, and a tracking map you can use when watching your local weather reports if a hurricane comes your way.

The next step you’ll want to take is to put together a survival kit. Include water, food, first aid supplies, batteries, clothing and bedding, and tools. If you take medications, you’ll also want to make sure you have an adequate supply. Check with your doctor or pharmacist about how much you should have for your kit and how you can get the extra refill for it.

If your home does not have hurricane-standard windows, you’ll want to make sure you have the proper materials to board them up if a hurricane is coming. If you live in an evacuation zone, make sure you know the proper evacuation routes and shelters, and be prepared for where to stay. Also make sure your car is filled with gas should you have to evacuate.

It’s important to have a plan of action if a hurricane heads your way. Talk your plan over with your family so everyone is on the same page.

Fire Safety: Proper Use of a Fire Extinguisher

Most people can easily identify a fire extinguisher and have a basic “point-and-shoot” concept on how to use one. However, there are some very important steps to using a fire extinguisher properly. An improperly used extinguisher can sometimes create more damage than good.

Make certain you are selecting the proper extinguisher for the fire you are fighting. Most household extinguishers are A-B-C, so they can be used on ordinary combustibles (paper, cloth, wood, rubber and most plastic), flammable liquids (gasoline, oil, grease and oil-based paints) and electrical fires. If there is kitchen fire involving cooking oil, a Class K extinguisher is required. If a Class K is not available, use baking soda, not and A-B-C extinguisher as the fire may spread. The final type would be flammable metals, which require a Class D extinguisher, but are uncommon in residential houses.

Ask yourself if the fire is containable using a household extinguisher. Always alert everyone of the fire and call the fire department before using the extinguisher. Secondly, make certain the fire is in a small and contained area before attempting to extinguish it. Make certain you have a clear exit route if the fire should become uncontrollable. Lastly, trust you gut instincts if you think the fire is not controllable with a household extinguisher.

Aiming the extinguisher is one of the most important parts of using it. Do not aim the extinguisher at the flames of the fire; it must be aimed at the base of the flames. The goal is to smother the fuel of the fire, not necessarily the flames.

The last factor is to determine if you are physically capable of handling the extinguisher. A older adult or child may not be able to lift or properly control the extinguisher, thereby putting themselves and those around them in danger.

Having a family might be one of the most complicated things you ever have to do, and if you can keep your family life running smoothly, you are likely one of the most skilled organizers around! There are so many things to keep track of.  If you’re not careful, it’s very easy for things to get lost in the shuffle.

One of the best things you can do to keep track of all the goings on in your family is to use some sort of organization system. Some people prefer to use an old fashioned notebook where everything gets written down. Others like to use a more formal type of date book that has a place for a calendar, lists, and phone numbers. If you are a little bit more tech-savvy, you might prefer to use a digital device like a Palm Pilot or a Blackberry. With digital devices, you can keep all your information in a much more compact and portable form. That can be a great advantage, but there can be disadvantages as well (for example, your digital device could have battery issues or just plain stop working!). Of course, you can have problems with a paper organization system too. After all, sometimes things get lost, stolen, or misplaced.

When you have a problem with your organization device, you might have to be creative to find information. For instance, if you need to call someone and you have lost your day planner, you need to have a way of finding that number. It might mean a backup paper list of numbers at home, or it might mean looking the number up on Canada 411. Just remember that you always need to have a backup plan if you want to keep your family life organized.

They are not aware about the negative effects of lighting a match-box as they conceive them as toys. A mere flicker from a match stick can lead to the outbreak of a massive fire. Any heating and cooking equipment should be kept at a safe distance from curtains, furniture, paper and bedding which catch fire easily. They should also be out of reach of the children and pets.

A lot of fire disasters occur while cooking. It is hence, important to remain cautious while cooking. A cooking area should be free of combustibles and should never be left unattended.
